In this month’s newsletter we would like to zoom in on a specific type of filter media which we test very often in our application lab:
Metal-based Filter Media
Metal-based filter media are available in many different shapes and structures, and are very often used in filtration and separation applications because of their high temperature and corrosion resistance, high porosity and permeability, as well as their high mechanical strength and recyclability.
The characteristics of the pore structure, such as pore sizes and pore size distribution, govern the filtration properties of all filter media. To compare filtration properties of different metal-based filter media, we have analyzed 3 different samples using a capillary flow porometer.

Large pores, high permeability
In the below table it’s clear that the pores are quite large, contributing to the high permeability. There is also a substantial difference between the pore sizes of the different metal-based filters, making them suitable for a wide range of filtration applications.
High durability & recyclability
To verify their high durability and recyclability, we have repeated the measurements 5 times on the same disk of sample #3. Below table shows that the standard deviation is very low. The samples do not deform, even after multiple measurements.
In summary
Metal-based filters can withstand a wide range of impurities, temperatures and pressure variations, without hindering the filter’s accuracy. Our Porometers can easily measure metal-based filter media, verifying a wide range of pore sizes and generating very reproducible results.
